Day of Dependance
As
America celebrates its Independence on July 4th, I come to realize that
our whole culture here in the U.S. is predicated on individual rights
and fulfillment. We take pride in being a self made individual. We prefer
personal enlightenment and spirituality as opposed to any kind of corporate
worship. We’ve become narcissistic in our thinking and tend to help
others only after we have satisfied all of our material needs and wants
first. Even those of us who have faith in Christ are encouraged to keep
it to ourselves as a private religion so as not to offend anybody.
But today, I for one would like to make this a “Day of Dependence”.
Today (and everyday for that matter) I am claiming my complete and utter
dependence on God for every facet of my life. I realize that everything
consists in Him and that in Him we live and move and have our being. (Acts
17:38). Without Christ my sins are not covered and I would find myself
in the hands of a just and righteous God who hates iniquity. Without the
Holy Spirit I could do no good thing. Without the Father’s correction
and love I would make a mess of everything I attempted to do. So in all
my thinking, in all my daily activities, in all of my ambitions, needs
and motivations, I know that I am fully dependent on God for it all. It
is not a crutch or a cop out to say that I depend on God. He is the creator
of the universe, the all knowing one, the giver of all life. So by acknowledging
that I depend on Him I am saying that His wisdom and His way is so far
above my thinking and desires and that I need to depend on Him for everything.
I can only depend on Him because Jesus Christ made that sacrifice over
2000 years ago. God came to earth as a man to reconcile us to God by His
death on the cross. His perfect life was given as a substitute for ours
so that we could stand before a righteous God justified through Him (Christ).
He then rose from the dead three days later to prove His claim that He
was indeed the Son of God, born of a virgin, fully God and fully man.
This is the Gospel, the good news, God’s free gift to all of man,
given to us so that men might always and forever depend on Him!
